Dear whoever found this
Status
Ephemeral. It may disappear at any minute.

Dear whoever found this,

I was never very good at doing just one thing.

I have made chairs and toys and things with no obvious purpose. I have worked on clothes, games, companies and software. I have made things you can hold, things you can sit on, and things that answer when you speak to them.

Some of them made it out into the world. Others never left the workshop, the computer or the notebook. I still think about a few of those more often than I probably should.

I don't think everything has to make sense together. There are enough things in life that already ask us to be reasonable.

So instead of a portfolio, I wrote you a letter. It is a little long. You can read it all at once, or one page at a time, or keep it for later.

Where I come from

Where I come from

I was born in the Atacama Desert, in a family of miners. I grew up among Caterpillar machines, blueprints and a lot of curiosity about how things worked.

That childhood left me something I still value very much. Respect for the craft. For the people who design, calculate, maintain and keep systems running.

I studied industrial engineering in Chile, at Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María. Then management and design in Milan, at the Politecnico. Then industrial design engineering in Valencia. I worked at Pirelli in Milan and later on innovation projects in Madrid. Lately, I have been studying film.

A few years ago I came to Vigo for love, and I learned about the good life. Being born in the desert and then adopted by moss, sea and rain was a surprise. I live in a house on the outskirts where my neighbours talk about sheep and I, sometimes, talk to them about artificial intelligence.

I still believe in beauty. Deeply.

The phone that answers

The phone that answers

The idea is simple, and a little uncomfortable. Take a machine that once helped people talk across long distances and then fell out of use. Bring it back with the same kind of technology that replaced it.

A visitor holds the blue handset of the moss-covered 2147 payphone at Sónar+D and looks up while listening.
Sónar+D, Barcelona, June 2026

We called it 2147. You lift the handset of an old payphone and someone answers. She speaks as the Earth, the planet as one living thing. There is no script and no menu. You can ask her anything.

It began at Milan Design Week in 2025, inside BASE Milano. In June 2026 we rebuilt it around a real Telefónica payphone for Sónar+D, at the foot of the staircase of the Llotja de Mar in Barcelona.

We recorded what happened, and the numbers surprised us. 681 conversations, close to fifteen hours of voice. Of 505 real exchanges, only nine people asked whether she was a person or an AI. They asked her name 289 times. And when she laughed, almost half the time the person laughed back.

After that the phone kept travelling. To IFA Berlin in September, and to Barcelona Design Week in October, where it hid inside an underground car park.

In 2025 the Chile Diseño Awards gave Ascolta la Mamma, our conversation with Gaia, the prize for Ephemeral Spaces. We made it at Divina Machina, together with everyone at Qs Ventures.

It is not really a tech demo. It is a question we left ringing. Do we have to build an artificial intelligence before the planet gets a voice we will actually pick up?

Things you can hold

Things you can hold

The Zanfona Chair, in ebonized ash with a rattan seat, against a white wall with a black football shirt resting on it.
Zanfona Chair, ash and rattan, 2024

Before becoming a chair, it already knew what music was. Yupanqui once said that before becoming a guitar, it was a tree listening to the birds sing.

The Zanfona Chair comes from that same idea. Ebonized ash, a seat of hand-woven rattan, and a curved back that remembers the zanfona, the hurdy-gurdy of Galician folk music. It was my chair for the Raúl Lamarca competition.

I make toys too. Maybe mostly toys.

O Pequeno Abel

Valpo is a handful of beech wood houses for building Valparaíso on a kitchen table. Vieira del Camino is a scallop shell that plays like a peitoque, so a child can carry a Galician foliada home. O Pequeno Abel is a little figure of Vigo's mayor and his famous Christmas tree. Eva Goes to Mars is a family of figures that keeps playing in augmented reality after you put them down.

And Melone, for Chicco. A plastic bowl for children from three to six. It can be a helmet, a bucket, a rocking chair, or whatever they decide. It won first prize in Back to the Future of Playing, the contest by Chicco and Desall.

Things you can't quite hold

Things you can't quite hold

Not everything I make has weight. A lot of it lives on screens.

I have helped shape the first fully digital mortgage in Mexico (Dreamboosters), a streaming platform and marketplace for sport (OFF TV), a home for a co-living community (Enso), a magazine for people who move countries (Twolander), and a playful way for students to train for their exams (Fit Generation).

El Cartero del Miño

Sometimes it is a world. El Cartero del Miño is a game where the landscape behaves like a living watercolour, and a young postman travels the river meeting creatures from Galician and Celtic folklore. For The Vow of Nazka, an RPG made in Chile, I helped on product marketing as an advisor and investor.

Sometimes it is clothes. Nothing is Namban borrows the quiet of Scandinavian and Japanese dressing. GSTBTC was streetwear about money, or maybe about belief.

Nothing is Namban

Sometimes it is a statement. In Especies I gave animals tattoos, as a way of saying they also have rights, feelings and a self of their own.

And sometimes it is something stranger. For a physics startup in Paris I designed a terahertz frequency modulator. Lasers and membranes. I am still learning how to explain it at dinner.

These days

These days

Most of my time goes to Qs Ventures, where I am creative director and CDO, and to Divina Machina, our studio for art, technology and immersive experiences. We run it together with Kurt Sommer, our operations partner.

We also build products inside Grupo Visual MS, for Vidiv and Reserva Entradas. Voices that listen, reason and actually do something useful. And I am Brand & Creative Ambassador for Decart.AI.

I like talking about how things are made. Especially the awkward part between an idea and a real experience. This autumn I did it on the Creator Stage at IFA Berlin, at NoCodeHackers AutomationDay and at Barcelona Design Week.

I am writing my first book. It is called Estética, entrenamiento y eutanasia del proceso creativo. Aesthetics, training and euthanasia of the creative process. The title was the easy part.

And there is Love You, Please., a small place we are opening for films, books, toys and whatever comes next.

Write back

Write back

If something here made you want to talk, write to me. A real letter would be lovely. An email is faster.

colmedo@qs.ventures

For press, Kurt Sommer at kurt@qs.ventures. The rest of my working life is on LinkedIn.

I keep thinking that creation is an act of presence and faith. You make the first effort, and then you let the project itself shoot the arrow.

Love you, please.
